What’s the difference between counselling and EMDR therapy?

Counselling gives you a supportive space to explore what’s on your mind. That might mean focusing on something happening right now, or it could involve gently looking at how past experiences are influencing you today. Counselling can be short-term and focused, or more holistic, depending on your needs.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a more targeted therapy, often used when past trauma or difficult experiences still feel present. It helps the brain reprocess these memories so they have less impact. Counselling and EMDR can be used separately or together, depending on what feels most helpful for you.

Do you offer counselling near Mansfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield?

Yes. I’m based at Kingsway Lodge Business Centre in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, within easy reach of Mansfield, Sutton-in-Ashfield and the wider Nottinghamshire area. I also offer online counselling and EMDR therapy via Zoom, available UK-wide.

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

People come to counselling for many reasons - you might be feeling anxious, low, stressed, or finding relationships difficult. Some people want support with something specific happening now, while others find that past experiences are still affecting them. You don’t need to have it all worked out before starting. Counselling gives you a safe, supportive space to explore things at your own pace.

How many sessions will I need?

There’s no one-size-fits-all. Some people find a few sessions are enough, while others prefer longer-term counselling or more targeted EMDR work. We’ll review regularly together so you stay in control of how long you’d like to continue.

Do online counselling sessions work as well as in-person?

Yes. Online counselling and EMDR via Zoom can be just as effective as in-person sessions. Many people appreciate the flexibility and comfort of joining from home, while others prefer the grounding of coming into the therapy room. You can choose whichever option feels right for you.
